Center for Social and Emotional Education

Mission

We work with schools nationwide to measure and improve school climate. Our goal is to promote positive school climate: a safe, supportive environment that nurtures social and emotional, ethical, and academic skills.

Programs

Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI) - The CSCI is a research-based needs assessment that provides immediate feedback on how students, parents, and school personnel perceive a school's climate for learning. Support this project, or learn more about the CSCI.

Professional Development - We provide workshops, presentations, regional trainings, school consultations and more to local and national schools.

Annual Summer Institute
- Each year we bring together educators, practitioners, researchers, and parents from across the country to learn about essential school climate improvement practices.

History

We were founded in 1996 at Teachers College, Columbia University.

School Climate Matters

Research repeatedly proves that positive school climate is directly connected to reduced bullying, lower dropouts, increased teacher retention and improved academic performance.

Plainly put, how we feel about being in school shapes our learning and development. In a country where 1 in 4 students feels unsafe in schools and nearly 50% of teachers leave within their first 5 years of teaching, it's essential for schools to cultivate and maintain supportive learning environments for their students, staff and teachers.

For every $2 you donate, you help give teachers and students a voice in shaping their school's climate.
