Volunteer computing is a type of distributed computing in which computer owners donate their computing resources (such as processing power and storage) to one or more projects.
Through volunteer computing, individuals, businesses, and organizations can donate the time computers are turned on, but idle, to projects that benefit humanity.
A few examples of the many volunteer computing projects include the Folding @ Home, Rosetta @ Home, and the World Community Grid. The WCG alone has registered over 300,000 users and accumulated over 110,000 years of donated computing time since November, 2004. - Impact:
