New Mammography Van Unveiled!
-
Published May 11, 2009 @ 02:50PM PT
The City of Newark, NJ, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Jersey recently unveiled a new and expanded Mobile Mammography Van, aptly called “Mammography in Motion.” According to UMDNJ, “The Mammography in Motion mobile van provides access to screening mammograms, clinical breast exams and educational information for uninsured and underinsured residents in Newark and other northern New Jersey communities.” As I reported earlier, studies have indicated that uninsured women are diagnosed with larger tumors and at later stages than otherwise similar, but insured women. The cause of this later and larger diagnosis may be attributable, in part, to a lack of mammography providers - an indicat... Read More

Michelle's Law Could Affect Your Insurance as a College Student with Cancer

Published November 25, 2008 @ 09:46AM PT
Michelle’s Law legislation would ensure students don’t have to maintain full-time status as a condition of coverage Source: Cancer Action Network, American Cancer Society If you are a college student diagnosed with cancer, you should have many priorities. Staying on top of your grades, getting to your cancer treatments, fighting nausea and getting better should be your priority, not worrying if you are going to lose your health insurance coverage. Right now, many college students receive their health care coverage through their parents’ family insurance plan. When a major illness comes up like cancer, students risk losing their health insurance coverage if they have to stop attending classes to get better. We just returned from the Young Adult Alliance (YAA) conference hosted by LIVESTRONG Foundation in Austin, TX, what an event! I was humbled and honored to represent one of the 100 different non-profit organizations and foundations, young adult oncology services, research organizations and medical institutions that comprise of the YAA. It was an incredible experience, and a groundbreaking event for the future of young adult oncology. As I write this blog, I can still feel the energy and hope that prevailed throughout the two-day event. The first day began with speeches from prominent AYAO advocates Doug Ulman and Eric Shanteau. The day continued with intense discussions and resource sharing, and task force breakouts. Even though the issues were serious, there were plenty of lau... Read More
