Mission
The Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis leads the way with comprehensive programs that empower people and families living with MS to transform and improve their quality of life.
Programs
We offer three specific educational wellness programs for people who have multiple sclerosis and their families. Our flagship program is the five day CAN DO seminar. CAN DO 2 is a two-day follow up, and the JUMPSTART program is a one day introduction to The Heuga Center wellness philosophy. All of the Heuga Center's programs are based on the philosophy that you can have a chronic condition AND have your health. With our team of MS experts in fields such as neurology, psychology, nutrition, and physical, occupational and speech therapy, the programs provide supportive and nurturing environments where participants learn how to minimize the impact of MS. By addressing the physical, emotional, intellectual and social aspects of MS, our empowering programs teach people distinct tools and strategies that help them maximize their quality of life, and shift their focus from what they cannot do to what they CAN DO. Personal attention is the key to the success of The Heuga Center's programs. All our program staff members have experience in working with people with MS. They take the time to listen, answer questions and provide individual recommendations.
History
Former Olympic ski racer, Jimmie Heuga, founded The Heuga Center in 1984 to teach people with multiple sclerosis (MS) how to use exercise to help manage their life with this chronic disease. He wanted to share the principles that transformed his life from one of despair to one of health and well-being. Heuga was diagnosed with MS in 1970, at the height of his racing career. At the time, people with MS were advised to avoid physical activity. Defying conventional wisdom, Heuga began a program of exercise, nutrition, and psychological motivation and found not only his physical condition, but his outlook on life improved.Jimmie's success revolutionized the management of MS. He transformed his frustration into productivity, reclaiming his life and showing the medical community that there was, indeed, another way to live with MS.
We're proud to introduce Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, formerly The Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis, a leading provider of innovative lifestyle empowerment programs for people with MS and their support partners. Since Jimmie Heuga founded our organization in 1984, our positive can do philosophy has helped thousands of people living with MS realize what is possible.
We changed our name to best reflect our passion and our mission to help more people
DISCOVER THE POWER TO BE MORE THAN THEIR MS.
