Mission
Book Wish Foundation's mission is to provide reading relief for people in crisis. In some of the world's most distressed places, such as Darfur refugee camps in eastern Chad, we support reading to improve education, mental health, and occupational training. Books, reading glasses, library construction, solar lighting, and aid to schools are all part of our comprehensive, targeted approach to reading relief.
Programs
Where: Bredjing, Treguine, and Gaga refugee camps in eastern Chad (population 60,000+) and nearby Chadian villages
Reading Relief: ESL curriculum, reading glasses, library construction, solar lighting, multilingual dictionaries, school supplies, school construction, French literacy, Arabic literacy
Note: Learning English is a "road to freedom" for the refugees; they organized the English classes themselves, paying teachers with commodities like soap. Solar lighting will "revolutionize" learning in the camps.
Reports: Darfur refugees celebrate arrival of first and second shipment of ESL books. More refugees studying English in Bredjing Refugee Camp, and choosing to study during the summer.
Where: Dhi Qar University, Nasiriyah, Iraq
Reading Relief: ESL curriculum, multilingual dictionaries, ESL for engineering and business
Note: "Thirty years of academic isolation has left Iraqi English teaching professionals starved for contact and resources." ESL material specialized to engineering will help maximize the value of the donation of modern engineering textbooks by Oregon State University, critical to the education of future leaders of the reconstruction of Iraq.
Reports: ESL material arrives at Dhi Qar University
History
Founded in October, 2007 in response to a Washington Post article about the lack of books in Gaga Refugee Camp, eastern Chad, and one refugee's tragic re-reading of the few books he possessed. His plea for books in the specific topics of interest to him sparked our desire to match our reading relief as specifically as possible to recipients' desires, rather than donating generically in bulk.
