Biodiversity Conservation Alliance

Mission

Wyoming has some of the healthiest ecosystems in the lower 48, but they are under intense attack by industrialization. BCA is dedicated to conserving our region''s rich natural heritage by calling attention to abuses of the land, empowering the public to get involved, and pressuring government agencies to protect land, wildlife, fish and plants. Everywhere we work, BCA strives to protect special places and sensitive habitats. In places where industrial uses are appropriate, BCA labors to require cutting-edge technologies and responsible land use to reduce destructive impacts to a minimum. BCA works to protect imperiled native species and clean water and air for the benefit of wildlife and the public for generations to come.

Programs

Wild Species - BCA labors to provide a voice for rare and native species. The current administration has refused to protect a single creature under the Endangered Species Act except under court order or threat of lawsuit. BCA successfully compels the US Fish and Wildlife Service to consider natives for protection before those species dwindle so far that recovery is impossible. In addition, BCA uses effective advocacy, drafts Endangered Species petitions, and serves as a resource of biological information for our region. We work through administrative and legal channels to ensure that all native species have a chance to thrive.
Wild Forests - BCA strives to conserve forests in our region, with a focus on keeping the Medicine Bow National Forest wild, and protecting and restoring the Black Hills National Forest. However, we also work to protect and restore the Bighorn, Arapaho-Roosevelt, Bridger-Teton and Shoshone National Forests. The Medicine Bow is a beloved place for recreation and solace for visitors, an important watershed, and home to a multitude of sensistive wildlife, fish and plants. In the past, the Medicine Bow has been one of the most clearcut and fragmented national forests in the rockies but is now more protected than ever before due to successful BCA advocacy. Rising from the plains, the Black Hills National Forest is a biologically unique forested island which unfortunately has been heavily overexploited for more than a century. As a result of BCA advocacy, the Black Hills are on a path toward better protection of wildlife, fish and plants.
Wild Deserts and Grasslands - World class sagebrush ecosystems of immense biological richness in Wyoming and surrounding states face major threats. An administration official recently characterized Wyoming's sagebrush basins as "ground zero for oil and gas development." BCA is a leading defender of Wyoming's deserts and grasslands and their native inhabitants from the ravages of oil and gas drilling.
