The Autism Treatment Acceleration Act (ATAA) has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Robert Casey (D-PA). ATAA is comprehensive federal legislation that addresses critical challenges facing the autism community, including increased funding for scientific research, treatment and services. A key section of the bill requires all insurance companies to provide coverage for evidence-based, medically-necessary autism treatments and therapies, ending the insurers’ long-standing discrimination against children with autism.

Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to cosponsor the Autism Treatment Acceleration Act (ATAA) just introduced by Senators Richard Durbin and Robert Casey. Originally drafted by then-Senator Barack Obama, the ATAA is comprehensive federal legislation that addresses critical challenges facing the autism community, including increased funding for scientific research, treatments and services. A key section of the bill requires all insurance companies to provide coverage for evidence-based, medically-necessary autism treatments and therapies, ending the insurers’ long-standing discrimination against children with autism.

The insurance reform section of the bill, in particular, will have an enormous impact by finally requiring insurers to cover therapies that cost upwards of $50,000 a year and are literally causing families across the country to go broke, risking their homes and the educations of their unaffected children -- essentially mortgaging their entire futures. Insurance discrimination against the 1 in 150 children diagnosed with autism is an issue that families have been working with their state legislatures to help remedy. Eight states have enacted autism insurance reform, but it is time for the federal government to step up to the plate and end this discrimination for all families.

I urge you to please become a cosponsor of the Autism Treatment Acceleration Act today and help families provide their kids with the services they need and deserve.
