On August 20, 2007, at Bnai Yeshurun in Englewood, NJ, Areyvut hosted a battle of the bands, where cell phones, ink cartridges, dvds, dvd players, laptops, mp3 players, digitalcameras/picture frames, dvr's, gps, and video game consoles were donated to charity. The bands that performed were “Zula,” “Hello Sid,” and “Thumbs Up Thumbs Down.”
The student participants in the Teen Philanthropy Institute (TPI) learned how to serve on a grant-making board and become a strategic philanthropist. Each student donated $250 which was then matched by a donor. From a list of seventy organizations, the students narrowed down their list to six. The participants then met with representatives from these organizations to consider to whom to donate their pooled fund of $11,000. The group had an opportunity to learn about each organization’s mission, target population, and structure. Each organization was asked to write a Request for Proposal specifying how they would utilize the funding. The culmination of the program took place on May 18th at the TPI Banquet when all six organizations in the Bergen County area were selected to receive portions of the donation. Throughout the evening students spoke of their TPI experience and the effect it has had on them.
