Mission
Started in September 2002, Areyvut reaches out to Jewish day schools and congregational schools, regardless of affiliation. Areyvut runs youth programming, consults Bnai Mitzvah students in creating meaningful social action projects, and writes and manufactures the "A Kindness a Day" calendar. Areyvut also runs chesed fairs, trains staff in Bnai Mitzvah programming, and offers presentations on incorporating social action into Jewish educational curriculum. We believe that we can work together to instill in Jewish youth the virtues of chesed, tzedakah, tikkun olam, and the everyday pursuit of social action and justice. Areyvut offers a unique opportunity for schools to create innovative and meaningful programs to make these values a reality for students and educators alike.
Programs
Bnai Mitzvah Consultations: Areyvut staff will work one-on-one with Bnai Mitzvah students and families to find meaningful and appropriate social action projects that best meet each individual's needs and interests. Together, we will explore options and ideas on how best to enrich the lives of the students, their families, and communities before, during, and after their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations.
Bnai Mitzvah Panel Program: A successful way to introduce Bnai Mitzvah students and families to the world of social action, Areyvut will invite an informative group of experts to share innovative, easy and meaningful ideas of how to incorporate important mitzvot into a Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration. Panelists, who may include representatives from local volunteer programs, educators, parents and students, will share stories and suggestions based on their own involvement in service projects, and Areyvut will provide additional resources to help families plan a community service component for their celebrations.
Bnai Mitzvah Fair: This exposition is a wonderful opportunity for a group of students to begin the process of choosing meaningful Bar/Bat Mitzvah projects. Representatives from various organizations will introduce Bnai Mitzvah students and families to a variety of service projects through one-on-one or small group encounters, and Areyvut staff will offer guidance on how to plan and execute community service projects that best meet the interests of individual students. Areyvut can cater a Bnai Mitzvah Fair to the interests of a specific school or organization or to service the broader Jewish community.
Day of Service: Areyvut will work with synagogues, schools or organizations to coordinate a Day of Service, a designated day for Bnai Mitzvah students to work with a group of their peers on an important community service project. By introducing participants to the community service experience, this program will motivate students to make social action an integral part of their individual celebrations. Ongoing Programs: Areyvut organizes ongoing programs for Bnai Mitzvah students throughout the year. Participants meet as a group to experience a range of community and social service opportunities.
Make a Difference Day: Every year Areyvut hosts the Make a Difference Day, where they partner with schools, synagogues, families, and community organizations to create a weekend full of acts of kindness. Hands on programs are done all over the globe and thousands of people are affected by the work done by the individuals who participate in the events.
Chesed Fairs: Areyvut plans and creates fairs for Jewish students of all ages to learn about and perform acts of kindness for various charitable organizations and groups.
Teen Philanthropy Institute: Students who participate in the TPI learn how to serve on a grant-making board and become strategic philathropists. Each student donated $250 which was then matched by a donor, one of the donors being Areyvut. The students then choose the charitable organizations they would like to work with, and meet these organizations' representatvies. The group has an opportunity to learn about each organization's mission, target population, and structure. Each organization is asked to write a Request for Proposal specifying how they would utilize the funding. The progam culminates with a Banquest where the students present the orgnaizations of their choice with their donation of more than $10,000.
