Mission
The mission of the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) is to work in partnership with indigenous people to conserve biodiversity, health, and culture in tropical America.
Programs
ACT has overarching programs in three countries: Brazil, Colombia, and Suriname. In Brazil, ACT has worked with the government and the indigenous peoples to produce cultural and land use maps of over 18,000,000 acres of rainforest, followed by work to implement management plans for these reserves. In Colombia, a diversity of projects includes shaman and apprentices programs, an indigenous school, community health "brigades" conducted by indigenous healers, an incipient women healers' union, medicinal plant gardens, sustainable life plans, park management, and the establishment of protected areas. Our program in Suriname is also multi-faceted, including integrated health clinics, indigenous mapping and land management (covering an additional 22 million acres), traditional healers' apprentices programs, and sustainable development activities.
