ALDA-MAINE

Mission

Education and advocacy for people of all ages with Hearing Loss. We are based in Maine, yet we cover the world on-line! Get involved soon. We want to hear from you.

If you don't have a hearing loss (yet), you probably know someone who does, since one out of 5 to 10 people have a hearing loss (depending on age group), everywhere in the world. In the USA alone, there are 30 million or more people with hearing loss.

Hearing is our vital human communication. We are not Deaf and most of us do not use sign language. There's so much to learn together! ALDAME today: alda-maine@caregiving-online.com.

Programs

Our website lists our events and programs. Our mission is community advocacy and education about hearing loss, as well as support for all members of this all volunteer non-profit.

Outreach and education takes a lot of time, energy, and funds are needed for one major cost - realtime captioning for all our events. Without it, we do not 'hear' each other - we are not ourselves - we need to read words and communicate via our voices and eyes too.

We deserve it, and are protected under the ADA laws, yet many companies and public places will not provide real time captioning yet. We need to educate them about our needs.

For example:

We have an active online forum for members.
We invite you to offer a presentation as a donor (online or in person).

Next event: Portland (Maine) Public Library Speaker, award winning Maine author Richard Russo, with CART/real time captioning provided by ALDA-Maine.

Education about CART is a major goal.

Facts about hearing loss is another goal (e.g. what does deafened mean?).

Aiming to reduce the stigma of hearing loss, among all age groups, is our goal too.

History

Started in April 2006, Rockland, Maine and for all of Maine and beyond. We are the only association of its kind in all of Maine. Hearing loss affects over 100,000 Maine people, and we participate in national and international networks for resources that are vital (and not yet easily available) for people with hearing loss in many places.

One resource is captioning on all Internet video programming. It is not yet there. We require full fair equal access, and need support to continue our grass roots activities.

Starting our second official year (July 2006), we now provide several Community educational events:
July 2007: Rockland Public Library Speaker
August 2007: Conservation Trust Meeting, Casco Bay Island
October: Portland Maine Public Library
November: Emergency Services Trainings

To survive, we need support. The national association gives us zero. We are all volunteers (money is not used for any salaries, wages, benefits).
