Alliance for Justice

Mission

Founded in 1979, the Alliance for Justice is an association of environmental, civil rights, human rights, women's rights, and consumer organizations. Citizens from across the country rely on the Alliance for Justice for statistics and analyses on the federal judiciary and judicial nominations, information on public interest law, technical assistance on IRS lobbying regulations, and training workshops for youth on organizing and coalition building. We provide many individuals and organizations with technical assistance and training materials, publications, and other guides.

Programs

Through the Judicial Selection Project, Alliance for Justice monitors and investigates judicial nominations at all levels of the federal branch, and encourages public participation in the confirmation process.

Independent Judiciary
is another feature of our work in the area of Judicial Advocacy. Alliance for Justice has taken the lead in raising public awareness about the significant impact the federal judiciary has on the country.

A primary mission of Alliance for Justice is to strengthen the capacity of the public interest community to influence public policy. Nonprofit Advocacy Project assists nonprofit organizations in this area through technical assistance, workshops, and a wealth of tools and information

The Foundation Advocacy Initiative was established to increase foundation support to organizations that seek to influence policy and public opinion. The Foundation Advocacy Initiative helps foundations in these efforts through workshops, examples of documents, and technical assistance.

Open access to the courts, regardless of one's personal resources, is vital to the effectiveness of our nation s civil justice system. To help ensure that our civil justice system remains responsive to the needs of all Americans, AFJ developed the Access to Justice Program, an infrastructure that supports a progressive agenda to protect and improve our civil justice system. Access to Justice provides the necessary resources that allow citizens to stay informed and get involved in the critical issues affecting our judicial system.

History

Alliance for Justice was founded by Nan Aron in 1979 as an association of public interest legal groups. AFJ now has more than eighty member organizations, and is celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2009.

It was, and is, AFJ's belief that the public's interest is best served when the policies of government result from a dialogue involving not just the decision-makers but also those whose lives are directly effected by such decisions, and when laws are measured against fundamental human rights and civil liberties by fair and independent courts.

Nonprofits, aided by the increasing resources of their philanthropic supporters, have often led the way in finding innovative approaches to addressing social problems and injustices. AFJ believes that nonprofits have a unique opportunity - indeed an obligation - to fully participate in public policymaking, and that the philanthropists who support them have an opportunity to facilitate the advancement of social justice.

AFJ works with and on behalf of its constituents to safeguard the fairness of our society, its public policymaking process, and our judicial systems.
