Support Human Rights in Guatemala!
ADIVIMA is a non-profit human rights organization based in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala that works to find solutions to the social, economic, political, cultural, and educational problems caused by the 36 year internal conflict in Guatemala. During the 36 year internal conflict the government and military targeted innocent indigenous communities like the ones surrounding Rabinal in a scorched-earth policy, which they claimed was to rid the country of insurgent guerrillas. In the Rabinal area, estimates show that between 4,000 and 5,000 innocent indigenous citizens were massacred, which makes up almost 20% of the entire population. ADIVIMA was founded by survivors of these massacres to serve the widows, orphans, and fellow survivors of the internal conflict. ADIVIMA`s mission is to restore the social fabric based on a true reconciliation, carried out through the memory, truth, and justice activities. In addition, ADIVIMA is also fighting to prosecute those responsible for the massacres as well as demand reparations for those affected by the conflict.
ADIVIMA`s Programs:
Human Rights: Within the Human Rights Program ADIVIMA offers legal and psychosocial accompaniment to exhumations of the mass graves, provides legal services and accompaniment to victims during the trials against those responsible, and works as a legal team in cases for repatriations for the victims of the forced eviction and massacres during the construction of the Chixoy Hydroelectric Dam.
Socioeconomic Development: ADIVIMA has implemented a program of small rotating micro credit opportunities for the victims of the internal conflict that currently live in extreme poverty. These small loans allow the families to improve their economic status through investments in their livelihoods and to provide new ways to generate income.
Community Organization, Formation, and Participation: The Community Organization, Formation, and Participation program strives to encourage all citizens to participate in and influence their local, departmental, and national governments. ADIVIMA holds workshops to teach citizens about human rights, voting rights, and civic participation. These workshops include men, women, children, and youth in order to involve and empower all members of society in building a better future for Rabinal.
Join the Fight to Help ADIVIMA Work for Indigenous Rights in Guatemala! ADIVIMA works on a very small budget and would appreciate any support to continue their fight for justice for the victims and survivors of the internal conflict in Guatemala. You have a chance to make a difference in the lives of those who survived the massacres and are still living with the burdens of the violence today. The indigenous people of Rabinal, Guatemala are working towards reconciling the past and making a better future.
Please join them in their quest for a more equitable and just world

- I was prompted to make this donation after watching this evening on PBS the heart-wrenching documentary "Discovering Dominga" which is part of the "Global Voices" series. "Discovering Dominga" is so very well worth your time if you have not seen it.
