My name is Tassos Coulaloglou and I’ve recently accepted a position as Peace Fellow with the DC-based Advocacy Project in Nepal. More known for its natural beauty than its political problems, Nepal is at a critical juncture in its history.  From the southern lowlands in the Terai to the impressive Himalayan wall of mountains in the north, this ethnically, religiously, and geographically diverse country has generated the democratic momentum that has finally brought the real prospect for peace and progress.

For roughly 10 years, Nepal was engulfed in the flames of civil war as the Nepalese royal family ruled with an iron fist. Nearly 13,000 people lost their lives. Widespread demonstrations throughout the country and hundreds of thousands of protesters filled the streets of Kathmandu last summer to peacefully demand change. Nepal’s people call this their “Democracy Movement”; it continues today.

My peace fellowship with the Advocacy Project comes at a crucial time. I will be working with the non-profit Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP), a network of locally based NGOs fighting for a democratic future predicated on human rights, peace, and the rule of law. I will have the unique opportunity to contribute to the “Democracy Movement” by conducting seminars on grassroots political organizing, supervising elections, and resolving local conflicts through dialogue and cooperation. I will also be working with journalists and other COCAP members to raise awareness, both locally and abroad, about the people’s struggle for freedom. During my own time, I plan to conduct independent research on various conflict prevention strategies, one of the areas of focus in my current graduate studies.

If you would like to sponsor the cause of democracy in Nepal, please do so now and make your voice heard.

Thank you!
