Help Sara educate children in Peru!
Visit Sara's blogs!
Unlike Americans, children in Peru are not guaranteed the right to a free education. While children deal with the daily difficulties and social problems of their impoverished communities, their uneducated parents do not understand the value of their education and do not have the resources to help them. Supporting Kids in Peru (SKIP) is a non-profit organization helping children and their families realize the importance of education and the means to achieve it. SKIP works with families in the El Porvenir area of Trujillo, Peru, where the children face many social problems in addition to their limited resources. Through services such as micro-credit and social work, they seek to provide sustainable methods through which the family can finance an education over many years.
You can make a difference! The Advocacy Project has selected Sara Zampierin as a SKIP Peace Fellow for 2007. The Advocacy Project is a DC-based non-profit that works to support community-based advocates for peace and human rights. One of the ways it does this is by sending Peace Fellows to volunteer with its partners each summer. As the first Peace Fellow to work with SKIP, Sara will be laying the groundwork for an advocacy campaign to promote education for disadvantaged children. Your donation would help Sara and the Advocacy Project to: Explore the opportunities for education for disadvantaged children and advocate on their behalfLiaise with community organizations to discuss the fundamental right to an education and how well the current system addresses thisHelp train SKIP personnel and Peruvian women’s groups to continue basic advocacy workPromote advocacy among SKIP’s beneficiary population, including training adolescents in civic participationHelp with grant seeking, proposal writing, and advocacy statements
Keep up-to-date Sara will keep donors and others updated throughout the summer by posting regular blogs on the Advocacy Project website. She is also will be more than happy to discuss, give a presentation, or write an article about her experience for any organization or group. For more information, please contact her at szampierin [at] advocacynet.org. After many years of studying the huge impact education can have on children and the larger community, Sara is thrilled to be able to help directly in Trujillo. Since SKIP and the Advocacy Project are both non-profit organizations, they are not able to defray any of the costs of living in Peru for 12 weeks. Please consider helping these children as well by making a tax-deductible donation by June 5.
