Help Michelle's work with trafficked women in Italy!

My name is Michelle Lanspa and I will be an Advocacy Project Peace Fellow this year! As a fellow, I will be working in Turin, Italy with the organization TAMPEP, the Transnational AIDS and Migrant Prostitutes in Europe Project. I am being sent to TAMPEP by The Advocacy Project (AP), a DC-based organization that works to strengthen community-based advocacy for social justice and human rights. They do this in part by sending Peace Fellows to work with organizations like TAMPEP. I will be working primarily with trafficked Nigerian women in Italy, helping TAMPEP help these women protect themselves, access social services, and explore the legal options open to them to denounce their traffickers. Another Advocacy Project Peace Fellow will be working with TAMPEP's new office in Benin City, Nigeria and we will get the chance to communicate throughout the summer about the trafficking issue on both ends – in the source and destination countries.
I am very, very excited to be working with this organization because I would like to make my future work migration and health issues. I also wrote my undergraduate thesis on the challenges Arab Muslim immigrants in Italy face staying healthy and accessing the Italian health care system. I hope to use this background and my Italian language skills to really be a helpful member of the TAMPEP and AP teams this summer. It is important that I help these women and the countries that send and host them because trafficking is a global problem, making many women and children victims everyday, and making this known to you and others within Italy and elsewhere is the first step in stopping the very complicated problem of trafficking.
I believe the work that AP is doing to help organizations like TAMPEP reach out and spread awareness is crucial and I hope you'll help me help them this summer!
