Mission
Our mission is to advocate for the humane and compassionate treatment of all incarcerated
women everywhere. We work for the release of all women who are unjustly imprisoned,
and strive to reduce the over reliance on incarceration
Objectives
We work to bring fairness and equity into the criminal justice system and to shift the focus to treatment and restorative justice. We work to educate the public, develop new legislation, implement new programs, and develop resources for incarcerated women.
Our Purpose/Vision Statement
It is our vision that all persons who are impacted by the criminal justice system will be treated with dignity and respect, and that restorative justice will be the goal of all parties. Everyone in society will recognize that they have an important role in the process, and rehabilitation will be a primary focus of the criminal justice system. We envision a future where female offenders will be helped to maintain their families and develop strong relationships with their children rather than having their families destroyed as a consequence of contact with the criminal justice system...
Programs
The Pen Pal Project
This project pairs incarcerated women serving sentences of 10 years or more with women who wish to have pen pals. Many amazing bonds and relationships are formed through the mail.
The Greeting Card Project
People in the community take the name of an incarcerated woman and commit to sending her one birthday and one Christmas card a year.
Christmas Project
Each year ACWIP and other community partners provide Christmas gift bags to all women incarcerated in the state prison system in southern California. Nearly 3000 gift bags are delivered each year and it is the only gift women in prison receive.
Children’s Toy Tree
Toys and gift cards are collected so that children who visit their mothers in prison during the holiday season will receive a gift. Each child is allowed to select the gift they want, and is told that the gift is from their mother.
Teddy Bear Project
Each year Acwip collects teddy bears for Get On The Bus, a program that takes children to
visit their mothers and fathers in prison on the Fridays before Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. At the end of the visit each child receives a letter from their parent and a special teddy bear that they believe is from their mother or father.
History
The Action Committee for Women in Prison is an organization that advocates for the humane and compassionate treatment of all incarcerated women. We work to achieve these goals both singly and in cooperation with other organizations through public education, rallies, lectures, grassroots organizing, and interaction with government officials, policy makers, and other interested parties. ACWIP serves as a resource for persons and entities seeking information about the issues of incarcerated women ACWIP is working to raise awareness of the aging and dying women in prison, seeking better medical care for all incarcerated women and compassionate release for the dying. We also work to bring attention to the plight of the mentally ill women both in prison and after release on parole.
