Tell Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign AB 399: HELP PREVENT NURSING HOME ABUSE AND NEGLECT

Thanks to the support of many organizations and countless citizens, the California Legislature passed Assembly Bill 399 (Feuer - Nursing Home Complaint Investigation Improvement Act of 2007) by a vote of 117-1. AB 399 now awaits the Governor’s signature, and we need your assistance to ensure that this vital legislation becomes law.

Co-sponsored by Bet Tzedek Legal Services and California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform, AB 399 would require the Department of Public Health to complete nursing home complaint investigations in a timely manner and provide a written determination to the complainant.

Despite its universal support, we are very concerned that the Governor may veto the bill due to unfounded cost concerns raised by the Department of Public Health.

We need your help.
Please write Governor Schwarzenegger as soon as possible and urge him to sign AB 399 into law. You can this sample letter , or you can write your own. Mail or fax your letters to the Governor at:

By Mail: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814

By Fax: 916-445-4633

Please also fax us a copy of your letter at 818-763-3299 (Bet Tzedek) or 415-777-2904 (CANHR).

Your letter can make a great difference! We truly appreciate your help!

For more information regarding AB 399, please read this letter from Bet Tzedek and CANHR to the Governor >>

  1. This is an ongoing pledge that should be fulfilled as often as possible.

If those of us who are young and strong today are fortunate enough to be able to afford and find managed care if and when it is needed, I suppose we would want that care to be free of abuse, neglect, and substandard conditions. Those of us who have loved ones in such managed care certainly know what the concerns are. Our elders, on whose shoulders we have climbed and because of whom we now survive, deserve respect, compassion, and the best of care; and they will not be assured these unless we be a voice for them.

The California Legislature passed AB 399 with a near-unanimous vote of 117-1. While no organization or individual has voiced opposition to AB 399, the CA Department of Public Health has raised unfounded concerns regarding its cost. On the contrary, AB 399 will actually save the state money as explained in this letter to Gov. Schwarzenegger: http://bettzedek.org/PDF/ab399_lettertogovernor.pdf Please urge Gov. Schwarzenegger to protect California's most vulnerable citizens by signing this vital, universally-supported legislation into law.
