Take Action on Tibet! Four Petitions

On Monday, a high-level delegation sent by President Obama met with the Dalai Lama at his home in Dharamsala, India to discuss the Obama administration's strategy on Tibet  and how the President can assist in pushing for a resolution to the issue during his first official visit to China in November.
Read news and analysis on the meeting.
http://actionnetwork.org/ct/Vp3VA_714SSU/

While the visit was a clear and strong signal of support for Tibet from the White House, it was followed by an announcement that President Obama is expected to meet with the Dalai Lama only after he returns from China and not when he is in Washington, D.C. in October.

In light of these developments, it is critical that the Obama administration hears strong messages of support for Tibet and calls for action from the American public and the U.S. Congress in the lead up to the President's China visit.
It's up to us to ensure that President Obama follows through on his commitment to assist in bringing about real change for Tibet.

While President Obama has voiced strong support for the rights and aspirations of the Tibetan people, there can be no doubt that the global economic crisis and the strong China lobby have the potential to push Tibet and human rights off the agenda of the U.S.-China summit.

Please send the letter to President Obama calling for action on the Tibet issue.
Your letter will be copied to your Congressional Representatives.

With hope,

China: Free Dhondup Wangchen and Golog Jigme!

Dhondup Wangchen, a Tibetan detained by the Chinese government for making the film, “Leaving Fear Behind,” was arrested in March 2008, after completing the documentary. He is currently awaiting trial. His family reports that the lawyer of his choice, Li Dunyong, was removed from his defense and has been threatened with disbarment. The family additionally fears that the health of Dhondup Wangchen, who suffers from Hepatitis B, has deteriorated significantly in detention. China: Release Runggye Adak Now!

China: Release Runggye Adak Now!

In November 2007, Runggye Adak, a Tibetan nomad from Lithang in Eastern Tibet, was unjustly sentenced to eight years in prison for publicly calling for the return the Dalai Lama to Tibet. Three other Tibetans were also sentenced, including Adak's newphew Adak Lupoe, who received a ten-year sentence on "collusion" charges.

Speak out against the Chinese Government's blatant violation of the Tibetan people's basic right to free speech by sending the [EDITABLE] letter.

Please take further action by calling China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and speaking out for Runggye Adak's release: +8610-65963100. Tell the Chinese government that the international community is scrutinizing this case closely.

Speak out Against China's Religious Order No. 5

On September 1st, 2007, China's State Administration on Religious Affairs implemented a new law called Order No. 5 which states that Tibetan Buddhist teachers, including the Dalai Lama, cannot be reincarnated without the permission of the central Chinese government. Order No. 5 is a direct attack on Tibet's ancient spiritual traditions and is meant to undermine the Dalai Lama's influence in the region, which is perceived as a threat by Chinese authorities.

Tibetans, their supporters worldwide, and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, the true representative body of the Tibetan people, have condemned this unjust law.

Tell me more

Take action now by signing the [INEDITABLE] petition addressed to Ye Xiaowen, Director of China's State Bureau of Religious Affairs.

Please also take a moment to phone the Bureau (Tel: 86-10-6409-5092 or 86-10-6409-5157) to express your opposition to Order No. 5.

Glad to sign on to these; and I would also add my wish that our President take a more proactive stance re:  the junta in Burma, and withdraw all personnel, military and civilian, from Afghanistan immediately.  Afghanistan is no more a "good war" than the junta is a "good government", Mr. President.
