Weight Watchers and Action Against Hunger join forces to combat global hunger
For the second consecutive year, Action Against Hunger is teaming up with Weight Watchers, a leader in weight management services, for the Lose For Good campaign. Building on last year’s successes, the 2009 campaign will once again raise vital funds for Action Against Hunger’s life-saving humanitarian programs around the world.
This year, Weight Watchers will donate $250,000 for every one million pounds lost by its members and online subscribers—up to one million dollars. The donations will be shared between the campaign’s two charitable partners, Action Against Hunger and Share Our Strength, an organization that addresses childhood hunger in the United States.
“It’s a great campaign, and we’re excited to be part of it for a second year,” said Geoffrey Glick, Director of External Relations for Action Against Hunger. “By supporting local food pantries, Lose For Good demonstrates that charity begins at home. At the same time, by fighting hunger in communities around the world, the campaign demonstrates that our local community is, indeed, a global community! What’s so impressive is that Weight Watchers recognizes the value of both approaches."
Beginning on August 30th, Lose For Good participants will have seven weeks—until October 17th—to fight hunger while losing weight. People interested in learning more about Weight Watchers and the campaign can visit www.weightwatchers.com/loseforgood.
This year’s campaign includes two new features: Global Good and Lose-A-Palooza. Global Good provides friends and family with a chance to inspire participants to achieve their target weight loss by making challenge contributions to Action Against Hunger. By taking part in Global Good, Weight Watchers members can leverage the Lose For Good campaign to help even more children—wherever there are communities threatened by hunger. To register for Global Good or support a participant, visit the Global Good webpage on Action Against Hunger’s website.
Lose-A-Palooza is a one-day online social networking event taking place on September 15th to help raise awareness and participation in the Lose For Good campaign. For every mention of Lose For Good made that day via blogs, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace, Weight Watchers will make an additional donation—up to $25,000 for just one day of social media activity. That’s on top of the $1 million that Weight Watchers is donating to Action Against Hunger and Share Our Strength as part of the 2009 Lose for Good campaign. Last year Weight Watchers members and online subscribers lost over four million pounds, resulting in the company donating the maximum one million dollars to Action Against Hunger and Share Our Strength. The inaugural Lose For Good campaign also collected and distributed 1.5 million pounds of food to families across the United States. This year, Weight Watchers will once again hold food drives in many of its meeting locations throughout the campaign to benefit local food pantries.
