International humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger has issued an appeal for urgent action to counter the alarming rates of acute malnutrition in Gao, an eastern region of Mali. Surveys carried out in the area reveal that 16% of children under five-more than 1,600 in total-have moderate or severe acute malnutrition, a proportion that exceeds the World Health Organization’s emergency threshold of 15%. Children with severe acute malnutrition face imminent starvation. A protracted drought in eastern Mali has triggered this crisis, destroying crops and decimating cattle, a main source of income in the region. The drought has prolonged the dry season by two months, causing farmers to delay planting and harvesting staple crops like rice; this in turn has set off a dramatic ri... Read More

    Published July 28, 2009 @ 07:51AM PT

Lomuria is a 16 month-old girl from Karamoja, Uganda. Her parents, Mogole Maria and Lotonkul John, used to tend cattle, which provided the family with a steady source of milk, meat, and income. But last July, they were left destitute after their village was raided and all 300 of the community’s cattle stolen. To make ends meet, Maria started collecting, chopping, and burning firewood to sell as charcoal at the local market. But three days of backbreaking work yielded less than $2.50-not enough to provide nutritious meals for the whole family. Although Maria and John coped as best they could, providing the family with one meal a day-either porridge for breakfast or beans for dinner-Lomuria couldn’t get the vital nutrients she needed to thrive. On the brink of starvation, w... Read More

  9. Race Against Hunger Student Spotlight

    Published August 13, 2008 @ 05:53PM PT

"Action Against Hunger Experiences" by Ramona Action Against Hunger inspired me to help out. We got pledges for the Race, which was sponsored through my school, The Ancona School. I felt proud to have participated in helping others. Next, I wanted to do more once the Race was over. I realized that my birthday was coming up, and I saw no reason not to use my party as a way to raise money. I figured that using our money for other people who need it was a better way than spending it on things I might want, but don’t really need. So to continue my plan, I asked my friends to bring a donation instead of buying something for me. That part was hard to do, as I like getting new things. It was the pictures and slideshow that were shown to us that did the trick to get me inte... Read More
