A billion hungry people & the media doesn't report it?

For the first time ever, there are now more than a billion hungry people in the world!

According to the UN, 100 million more people have joined the ranks of the hungry since last year as a result of high food prices and the global financial crisis.

How has the media reported this? Hardly at all, really!

The New York Times printed a mere 91 words-one paragraph-about this urgent crisis and buried it on page 6.

Tell the Times to give global hunger the coverage it deserves!

Give Global Hunger the Coverage it Deserves

Dear Mr. Hoyt,

United Nations food officials announced on June 19 that the number of hungry people worldwide has passed the one billion mark for the first time in history. Since last year, 100 million more people have joined the ranks of the hungry as a result of high food prices and the global financial crisis. How did the New York Times report this? By running 91 words from the Associated Press on page A6. That same day, a lengthy story about the best spots to witness golfers hitting balls into water holes made front page news. One in six people go to bed desperately hungry every night, and as many as 5 million young children die from malnutrition-related complications each year. The knowledge and the tools to end deadly hunger are readily available. All we lack is the will. Sadly, the world will not garner the will until the scourge of hunger becomes prominent news. Please give this crisis the attention it deserves.
