American Civil Liberties Union

Testimonials

  1. Alex H ACLU is right in principle--but refuses to apply common sense

I agree (in principle) with the ACLU. I feel that Americans need to stand up for their civil liberties. As we become more technologically advanced it becomes increasingly tempting, and increasing easy for the government to take advantage of citizens, and take their civil liberties. However, I have a problem with the ACLU, or any other organization blindly fighting, thinking that they are helping to achieve some goal.

For example, the ACLU supports the legalization of child pornography, the legalization of drugs, the legalization of prostitution and the list goes on. They have defended the Ku Klux Klan and the Westboro Baptist Church (the ones infamous for their “Thank God for 9/11” and “God hates Fags” signs). The concept of the ACLU is right, but the ACLU themselves is dead wrong.

Thank you for stating this.  I too have felt the confusion that stems from an organization that supports "liberties" to the detriment of others.  It makes no sense. The concept is in opposition to the facts.  We need civil liberties but not this organization is a poor representation of the "American Dream."

Both Chris & Alex are mis-informed.  Freedom of speech defense is not limited by those only you approve of.  The ACLU merely defended the right of the KKK to have a parade in Skokie.  Over broad restrictions by the government on publications hurts us all.  If child pornography is evidence of a child injured, then prosecute the perpetrator, not the publication.  How will we find them if a black market in free press is encouraged.  What makes sense is defending freedom.  The posts by Alex & Chris play into the hands of extremists who blame the ACLU for all manner of social ills.  The same who blame civil libertarians seek to reduce funding for child protection and increase fundings to violent groups over seas who commit religious or economic crimes against people.  The principle is sound, the observations of you two are incorrect.

I used to be a card carrying member. They have lost their minds though, and have gone off the deep end. They've actually become more anti American in the last few years than their name implies and I can see little use for their organization or their politically correct irrationality.
