Mission
Our mission is to build a movement of low-wage women to achieve economic justice. We combine grassroots organizing, advocacy, public education and leadership development to accomplish our goals.
All of our work is grounded in local grassroots organizing through which we involve women in campaigns to improve public policy. We combine this work with advocacy, public education, and leadership development to accomplish our goals. Our program stems from being on the front lines, seeing the needs and trends from women most affected by injustice.
Our work is national in scope, in order to promote a national policy agenda and create an effective movement, as well as local in scope to promote state and local policy agendas.
Programs
Some of our current programs include:
9to5 Employment Rights Helpline (1-800-522-0925): 9to5 provides legal advice and referrals to hundreds of women each year who are experiencing workplace inequities or discrimination.
Job Retention Skills Training: 9to5 offers workshops on job skills training and workplace issues including interview skills, conflict resolution and balancing work and family.
Leadership Development: we provide women with training, direct support, and opportunities to get involved as activists on issues affecting low-wage women.
Policy Advocacy: we work with 9to5 members and other grassroots coalitions to promote policies such as living wages and family friendly workplace policies.
Election Connection: we do broad outreach and non-partisan voter registration, education and get-out-the-vote efforts to increase participation among working women and hold elected officials accountable to our issues.
History
In 1973, a group of office workers in Boston got together to talk about issues which had no name: sexual harassment, work/family challenges, and pay equity. From this beginning, 9to5 emerged as the national organization dedicated to putting working women's issues on the public agenda. 9to5's constituents are low-wage women, women in traditionally female jobs, and those who've experienced any form of discrimination. Now in its fourth decade, 9to5's mission is to strengthen women's ability to win economic justice. 9to5 is a membership organization and membership is open to all.
